What we find
Interwar villas with wiring in layers. The original from the thirties, a replacement from the sixties, a partial one from the nineties. Under one faceplate you find copper and aluminium, cloth and PVC, on the same joint — a combination that corrodes and ends in overheating.
Larger installations than a flat. A house with a garden means more circuits, outdoor lighting, a garage feed, sometimes a pool or a generator. A new installation here is more often a whole project than an intervention.
An electrode from the year of construction. In buildings this old the tape in the ground lost its contact long ago. Measuring earth resistance is the first thing we do, because in a house that is the only protection between a fault on an appliance body and a person.
Constraints we respect
In listed buildings and around original joinery we do not chase. We run surface conduit in trunking that follows the existing lines. Not prettier, but the only approach that leaves alone what must be left alone.
The same goes for lighting: fitting to old ceilings needs a load check before anything is hung, and on decorative ceilings it is not always possible exactly where you would want it.
